Drivers of global nitrogen emissions

چکیده

Abstract Nitrogen is crucial for sustaining life. However, excessive reactive nitrogen (Nr) in the form of ammonia, nitrates, oxides or nitrous affects quality water, air and soil, resulting human health risks. This study aims to assess drivers Nr emissions by analysing six determinants: efficiency (Nr per unit production), production recipe (inter-sectoral dependencies), final demand composition (consumption baskets households), destination vs. investment balance), affluence (final consumption capita) population. To this end, we construct a detailed multi-regional input-output database featuring data on international trade between 186 countries undertake global structural decomposition analysis change from 1997 2017. Our shows that has improved over assessed time-period, however affluence, population growth have resulted an overall increase emissions. We provide perspective at country level, breakdown into contribution domestic footprint rest-of-world footprint. highlight food coupled with growing increasing worldwide.

Global and regional drivers of accelerating CO2 emissions.

CO2 emissions from fossil-fuel burning and industrial processes have been accelerating at a global scale, with their growth rate increasing from 1.1% y(-1) for 1990-1999 to >3% y(-1) for 2000-2004. The emissions growth rate since 2000 was greater than for the most fossil-fuel intensive of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emissions scenarios developed in the late 1990s. Global emiss...

Impact of perturbations to nitrogen oxide emissions from global aviation

[1] The atmospheric response to perturbations in NOx emissions from global air traffic is investigated by performing a coherent set of sensitivity experiments. The importance of cruise altitude, size of the emission perturbation and geographical distribution of emissions is systematically analyzed using two global chemistry transport models and an off-line radiative transfer model. NOx emission...

Nitrogen trifluoride global emissions estimated from updated atmospheric measurements.

Nitrogen trifluoride (NF(3)) has potential to make a growing contribution to the Earth's radiative budget; however, our understanding of its atmospheric burden and emission rates has been limited. Based on a revision of our previous calibration and using an expanded set of atmospheric measurements together with an atmospheric model and inverse method, we estimate that the global emissions of NF...

Human nitrogen fixation and greenhouse gas emissions: a global assessment

The net impact of human nitrogen (N) fixation on climate (ignoring short-lived components) mainly depends on the magnitude of the warming effect of (direct and indirect) nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and the cooling effect of N-induced carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake. N-induced CO2 uptake is caused by anthropogenic N deposition which increases net primary production (NPP) in N-limited ecosystems an...
